It’s all about the oats

We all know oats are beneficial for overall health. But did you know that oats offer benefits for your skin? Yes, indeed. Oats prevent acne and improve complexion. They even act as a natural skin cleanser. It’s also effective for relieving dryness and inflammation, including insect stings, rashes, and eczema.

Ground oats can absorb the surplus oil on your skin and help treat acne. You can make a homemade scrub that might also work in treating acne and removes dead skin cells and clears your skin. For the scrub, you’ll need one tablespoon of finely ground oatmeal, one tablespoon of raw brown sugar and one tablespoon of coconut oil, mix together and apply to skin with a natural sponge in a circular manner then rinse with cold water, your skin will thank you. Oatmeal soap can also be used as it acts as a natural exfoliant and absorbs the excess oil without over-drying the skin.  Ground oats also work as a natural cleanser because it contains compounds called saponins that remove dirt and excessive oil from the pores. And by the way, they don’t cause irritation.

Even an oatmeal bath can help. Sprinkle your water with bicarbonate of soda and uncooked finely ground oats. Soak in the bathtub water for about 20 minutes and then pat yourself dry. Apply moisturizer while your skin is damp. For chickenpox patients and poison ivy sufferers this can also be a wonderful alternative and it offers good favorable results with eczema patients as well.

The compound beta-glucan in oats form a fine film on your skin which penetrates deep into the skin and offers the much-needed moisture. The very fact that oats are being used in products like body scrubs, soaps, and exfoliating creams tells us how beneficial they are for skin.

Oats are mostly safe to use on skin. However, few reports of sensitivity to oats are reported mainly in those with eczema. Thus, you ought to avoid oats altogether if you experience redness, irritation or worsening of eczema after using it. Reports of cross-sensitivity with wheat also exist. For gluten intolerant patients caution is recommended when using oats.
