What should we eat during these summer months?

The days are longer, warmer and yes, we are more active during these summer months, so should we change our diet?  I say yes, let’s try new fruits and vegetables, let’s take advantage of local farmer’s markets and seasonal pickings where available in your area.  Summer is here so let’s go outside, sweat some more, hydrate, eat local and have fun.

I’d like to share some of my favorites and maybe you can drop us a line with a few of yours as well.

Who doesn’t love watermelon?

This fruit is often referred to as the “hydration hero” as its high-water content keeps you cool and hydrated and will also keep you feeling full, which could curb cravings.  Watermelon also contains vitamins A, B6, C, lycopene and even potassium, all of which protect skin cells from sun damage.

Ripe, fresh oranges anyone?

This sweet citrus fruit is rich in potassium, a nutrient that’s crucial in the summer. Did you know you lose potassium through sweat, which puts you at risk for muscle cramps? Go ahead eat an orange, replenish your supply and keep your muscle cramps away.  Additionally, oranges will keep you hydrated during your sweatiest summer days.

How about a juicy ripe mango?

I must admit mangoes are probably my favorite fruit by far.  It can be eaten green with salt and chilis or ripe, either way, it’s delicious.  You can also cook it in a stir fry or make a pie.  Mangoes are filled with fiber, Vitamins A, C, B6, E, and riboflavin.

The majestic pineapple!

Pineapples contain tons of Vitamin C, manganese, fiber and bromelain.  This tropical fruit is an all-time winner for those who suffer from arthritis as the bromelain lowers inflammation in the body. Pineapple can be consumed raw or baked into tarts.

It’s berries season!

Berries are great sources of fiber, low in calories and are very high in vitamin C.  They also increase blood flow to the skin and decrease sensitivity to light, which improves skin’s appearance, structure, and texture. You can add fresh berries to your cereal, add honey for a tasty dessert or top a bowl of ice cream with fresh berries.  I guarantee you will love its goodness.

Fresh salads are a must

Try making a salad with dark, leafy greens like spinach, baby greens, arugula or kale.  These dark-green foods when consumed convert to Vitamin A and then protect skin from sun damage and strengthening the skin’s defenses against damaging rays.
